Daily Science Report for 4 July 2009

LOCATION: In transit to Victoria, BC, Canada.

SCIENCE UPDATE: Transit to Victoria began at ~0730 hr. Expedition 321T Juan de Fuca operations and science reports were completed. School of Rock (SOR) participants continued finalizing their reports and lesson plans. Preparation of off going shipments and lab cleaning continued.

The JOIDES Resolution celebrated 4th of July with a very special lunch prepared by the galley crew.

LOCATION: At Site U1301, 47° 45.23' North, 127° 45.83' West

SCIENCE UPDATE: School of Rock (SOR) participants were introduced to GIS applications and the Ocean Observatory Initiative (OOI). Continue to test and revise classroom designed methods to measure carbonate content in core samples.

Technical staff began preparing shipments going off in Victoria. Estimated arrival time in Victoria, BC is ~0800 h on 5 July.

LOCATION: At Site U1301, 47° 45.23' North, 127° 45.83' West

SCIENCE UPDATE: Completed 321T cementing operations report. Anticipated departure time to Victoria, BC, is ~0700 hr Saturday 4 July.

School of Rock (SOR) participants experimented with different methods to measure carbonate content in core samples. Also continued making smear slides, identifying microfossils and taking photos of microfossils under the microscope for use in their classrooms. SOR participants Yasuhiro Taguchi and Norihito Kawamura led the first SOR video conference with Japan. It was also the first video conference with two schools simultaneously. About 1000 Japanese high school students participated in the conference.

LOCATION: At Site U1301, 47° 45.23' North, 127° 45.83' West

SCIENCE UPDATE: The drill string was pulled clear of the seafloor, ending cementing operations at Site U1301 at ~0900 hr. Currently standing by on location until berth availability is determined. School of Rock (SOR) activities continued. SOR participants discussed results from the planktonic foraminifer study from Leg 167. Participants also received a debriefing from the Co-Chief, Operation Superintendent, Captain and Head Electrical Engineer about the cementing operations. In the afternoon, several SOR participants presented local geology from their home towns.

Daily Science Report for 30 June 2009

LOCATION: At Site U1301, 47° 45.228' North, 127° 45.827' West

SCIENCE UPDATE: Cementing operations at Hole U1301A and U1301B continued throughout the day. Observations with the Subsea TV showed cement was pouring up and out of the holes on the platform indicating both cones were filled with cement. The School of Rock (SOR) participants watched the video monitors with excitement as the reentering and cementing actions at the CORKS unfolded. SOR participants spent rest of the day studying planktonic foraminifers from Leg 167, Hole 1014A.

LOCATION: In transit and arrive at Site U1301, 47° 45.228' North, 127° 45.827' West

SCIENCE UPDATE: School of Rock (SOR) participants discussed aligning teaching standards to science content and skills learned during the last few days on the JOIDES Resolution. SOR participants developed themes, lesson plans and corresponding skills. Later in the morning, SOR participants were introduced to fluid and heat flow in the ridge flanks.

Arrived at Site U1301 at 2400 hr, preparing drill string for re-entry and cementing operations.

LOCATION: En route to Site U1301. At 2400 h, 44° 03.9' North, 126° 56.3' West

SCIENCE UPDATE: School of Rock (SOR) activities continued through out the day. SOR participants engaged in a lesson on porosity, hydraulic conductivity and permeability of sediments and rocks. Participants conducted experiments on samples from four different cores to estimate porosity and hydraulic conductivity. Most of the afternoon was occupied by discussions on borehole observatories and preparing smear slides.

Estimated time of arrival (ETA) at Site U1301 is midnight on June 29.

LOCATION: En route to Site U1301. At 2400 h, 40° 39.3' North, 126° 11.3' West

SCIENCE UPDATE: The School of Rock (SOR) teachers spent most of the morning learning hydrothermal circulation, sulfides and biota at vents. In the afternoon the teachers were introduced to drilling and science results from Expedition 301.

A pre-site operations meeting was held to discuss cementing strategies. Estimated time of arrival (ETA) at Site U1301 is late on June 29.

LOCATION: En route to Site U1301. At 2400 h, 38° 02.6' North, 125° 12.6' West

SCIENCE UPDATE: The School of Rock (SOR) teachers were introduced to ocean crust and heat flow. The teachers measured thermal conductivity on a Hole U1338D instructional core section. SOR participants also received rig floor tours.

SCIENCE UPDATE: School of Rock (SOR) teachers and scientists attended Captain's introduction and initial safety orientation. SOR teachers were introduced to core flow and smear slide preparation. Using an inquiry approach, the educators also described and analyzed physical data sets from ODP Leg 199 Site 1220.

LOCATION: En route to Site U1301. At 2400 h, 32° 52.8' North, 120° 07.9' West

SCIENCE UPDATE: School of Rock (SOR) teachers and scientists attended Captain's introduction and initial safety orientation. SOR teachers were introduced to core flow and smear slide preparation. Using an inquiry approach, the educators also described and analyzed physical data sets from ODP Leg 199 Site 1220.

Daily Science Report for 23 June 2009

LOCATION: In port, San Diego Harbor, San Diego, CA.

SCIENCE UPDATE: Expedition 321 scientists disembarked the ship at 1000 h. Expedition 321T Juan de Fuca scientists, School of Rock (SOR) teachers and other USIO support personnel boarded the ship at 1045 h. Scientists and SOR participants began shipboard orientation.
