Daily Science Report for 6 June 2022

Location: Repair Quay 3, Cape Town, South Africa

Science Update: Port call activities continued with the bunkering of 470 mt fuel. Installation, alignment, and testing of the replacement drawworks brake was completed. Shipments of hazardous chemicals and Schlumberger equipment were received, and foreign and return airfreight departed the vessel. All onboard personnel took COVID-19 antigen tests.

Daily Science Report for 4 June 2022

Location: Repair Quay 3, Cape Town, South Africa

Science Update: Port call activities included reinstallation of the replacement drawworks brake on board and the loading of bulk barite and sepiolite. Nineteen members of the science party departed the vessel. All onboard personnel took COVID-19 antigen tests.

Science Update: Port call activities included installation of the hub on the replacement drawworks brake, as well as the loading of bulk barite. All onboard personnel took COVID-19 antigen tests.

The science party conducted virtual laboratory group crossover meetings with their Expedition 393 counterparts, who are currently in the hotel in Cape Town, South Africa, for their seven-day quarantine period. One science party member departed the vessel.


Daily Science Report for 2 June 2022

Location: Repair Quay 3, Cape Town, South Africa

Science Update: Port call activities included removing the hub from the failed drawworks brake. The replacement brake arrived in Cape Town and was transported to the repair facility. Testing of the magnetic susceptibility (MS) sonde for the triple combo logging tool string was conducted.

The science party held a series of mini-research talks addressing broader science topics, including environmental magnetics, redox proxies, and nannofossils. Individual scientists met with the Sample Allocation Committee to discuss postexpedition research plans. Writing and editing of expedition reports continued.

Science Update: Port call activities continued. Additional freight was received and the failed drawworks brake was removed from the vessel and transported to the repair facility.

The science party participated in a second ship tour, highlighting the vessel’s dynamic positioning system. Individual scientists met with the Sample Allocation Committee to discuss postexpedition research plans. Writing and editing of expedition reports continued.
